Preparing for an appointment

It is helpful to keep children occupied in the waiting rooms.
It is helpful to keep children occupied in the waiting rooms.

Complete all requested paperwork in advance and consider questions and concerns you want to discuss with the provider. Bring any requested records that were not directly sent to our office to your appointment.

Let your child know the purpose of the appointment in advance. Bring something to keep him or her occupied in the waiting room, such as a favorite toy (such as the Sensory Inside-out Ball), game or book.

During your visit, the provider will ask about your current concerns and goals for your child, your child's behavior at school and home and his or her developmental, medical and family history. With this information, providers will develop an assessment and intervention plan tailored to your child's individual needs.

Families are encouraged to attend all appointments with their child or adolescent to receive maximum benefit from the evaluation process and treatment. Some parents prefer their child to remain in the waiting room during a portion of the visit, because the information being gathered can be confusing or upsetting for the child to hear. Also, providers may not be able to get all the relevant information they need if the child's behavior is disruptive or distracting. If your child is age 7 or younger and you want him or her to stay in the waiting room while you meet with the provider, please bring another adult to supervise.
