Common conditions

This section includes conditions that can be evaluated and treated by Alexander Center professionals.

Behavioral problems

Behavioral problems (or behavioral disorders) is a general term covering many emotional and psychological conditions. Behavioral problems affect your child on personal and social levels. The disorder also can affect your child’s physical health due to the stress it causes.

Below are common behavioral problems and disorders:

  • anger
  • biting
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • cutting
  • shyness

Risks, causes

Behavioral problems and disorders are thought to be a result of genetics, chemical imbalances, a child’s environment and parent-child relationships.

Tests, treatment

If you see signs of behavioral problems or disorders in your child, consider visiting a health care professional, such as a child psychiatrist or psychologist, a clinical social worker or other certified mental health worker. They will be able to diagnose and come up with an appropriate treatment plan for your child.

Treatment may involve medication, therapy or a combination of both.
