Emotional disorders (secondary to other diagnoses)
Children who have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), an autism spectrum disorder or another developmental disorder also may develop depression, anxiety or other emotional disorders.
Signs
If you are concerned your child might have depression, look for these signs.

Withdrawal from family and friends

Loss of interest in hobbies or fun activities

Sleeping too little or too much

Thoughts of suicide

Poor performance in school

Feelings of worthlessness

Irritability
Symptoms

Stomachaches and headaches (with no physical cause)

Intense fears or phobias

Avoiding situations that may make one nervous

Repeatedly washing hands or other repetitive behaviors

Clinginess and fear of separation
Tests, treatment
If you are concerned about secondary emotional disorders in your child, a child psychologist or psychiatrist can determine whether or not your child needs treatment. Treatment may consist of therapy, medication or both. It is important that your child be treated for any secondary disorders, as well as the developmental disorder.
