Common conditions

This section includes conditions that can be evaluated and treated by Alexander Center professionals.

Mathematics disorder

Mathematics disorder (also called dyscalculia) is a learning disorder that causes children to have difficulty understanding math concepts. Children who have mathematics disorder struggle in academic areas that involve math skills, but do not necessarily have difficulty reading or writing.

As is found with developmental dyslexia and reading disorders, children with mathematics disorder usually have IQs within normal range.

Symptoms

  • Difficulty understanding math concepts
  • Trouble understanding and solving word problems
  • Difficulty with steps in math problems
  • Difficulty recognizing patterns
  • Difficulty organizing problems in writing
  • Trouble memorizing multiplication tables
  • Difficulty adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing

Tests, treatments

If it is determined that your child has mathematics disorder, education can be geared toward strengthening math skills through repetition and practice. You also may want to get a math tutor for your child for additional support.
