Soiling (encopresis)
Encopresis is found in children who have been toilet-trained, but are constipated or have a behavioral disorder that affects their bowel movements. This causes children to have accidents. Soiling can cause children to feel ashamed and embarrassed and, eventually, to have problems with self-esteem.
Symptoms
-
Stomachaches
-
Infrequent bowel movements
-
Large, painful bowel movements
-
Accidents in underwear or while sleeping
Tests, treatment
A doctor visit will help determine what is causing your child’s encopresis and whether it is due to physical or emotional problems.
Children who have encopresis frequently have constipation that can be improved by changing to a high-fiber diet with lots of fresh vegetables and fruits. It also helps for your child to get exercise and talk openly with you about his or her concerns. Often, fiber supplements and stool softeners can be helpful. Sometimes laxatives or enemas may be necessary.
Behavior modification, which involves scheduled toilet trips, sitting, charting and rewarding successes, may be helpful. If emotional problems are involved, your child’s doctor may give you a referral to a child psychologist for therapy.
