Sinusitis
Sinusitis is an inflammation or swelling, of the sinuses. Most cases of acute sinusitis start with a common cold, which is caused by a virus. Chronic sinusitis usually is due to chronic inflammation instead of a bacterial infection. Allergic rhinitis is the most common underlying cause of chronic sinusitis, but it also can be from structural problems in the nose or immunological problems.
Sinusitis can affect the nose, eyes or middle ear.

Diagnosing
It is easy to confuse colds with sinusitis, but colds usually last one week to two weeks and disappear without treatment. Sinus infections last longer and typically cause more symptoms than a cold.
A diagnosis of sinusitis is based on your medical history and physical examination.
Treatment
To relieve symptoms, your doctor may recommend decongestants, antibiotics and pain relievers.
