Medications

Medications are an important part of treating asthma. They can effectively prevent and control symptoms. With the right medications, most people with asthma lead normal, symptom-free healthy lives.

Two main types of medicines are used.

  • Quick-relief medicines – taken at the first signs of asthma symptoms for immediate relief of symptoms, such as coughing, chest tightness and wheezing. You will feel the effects of these medicines within minutes.
  • Long-term control medicines – taken every day, usually over long periods of time, to prevent symptoms and asthma episodes or attacks. The full effects of these medicines take a few weeks.

Just as each person’s asthma is unique, approaches for treating asthma need to be targeted to each individual’s needs. The type of medication your doctor prescribes will depend on the severity of your asthma. Some people with asthma take medicine daily, while others take medication on an as-needed basis.

Understanding your asthma medications – what they do, how they work, when to take them and possible side effects, including bone loss – will help you use them safely and effectively. Taking medications as directed is essential for asthma management. Working in partnership with your doctor or other health care provider helps ensure that your medication treatment program is tailored to your needs.
