What makes our program unique?

We perform more than 500 laparoscopic surgeries a year. The majority of our surgeries are performed laparoscopically, involving several small incisions rather than one large one. This procedure causes fewer complications and greatly reduces recovery time. Our surgeons have additional training to perform this advanced procedure, which requires a great deal of skill.

All our bariatric surgery nurse clinicians can personally relate. Firsthand, personal experience of bariatric surgery enables our nurses to better relate to our patients.

All complications are well below the national average.  In 2005, 92 percent of Park Nicollet bariatric surgery patients had zero complications, compared to 89 percent nationally. Our leak rate at the staple line from Roux-en-Y surgery is 0.8 percent, compared to 2 to 3 percent nationally. Our mortality rate is 1 in 1,470, compared to the national average of 1 in 200.

All behavioral preoperative assessment services are provided through Park Nicollet Clinic, which allows the various providers to collaborate and provide greater continuity of care.

Free group information session and nurse consultation

We have a designated bariatric surgery unit at Methodist Hospital where nurses are well-educated on the care and needs of bariatric surgery patients. The unit includes larger rooms, bariatric furniture and equipment, and special training for nursing staff.

Time to surgery. Our time from initial nurse visit to surgery averages three months.

We have one of the best comprehensive post-surgery follow-up programs in the area. Patients see registered bariatric nurses at one week, one month, three months, six months, nine months, 12 months, 18 months, 24 months and then annually for life. We assess nutritional status with lab tests every six months for two years, then annually. Patients see a dietitian four times in the first year, then annually. Psychologists and physical therapists are available as needed. A support group, led by a patient volunteer and a nurse clinician, also meets twice a month. One meeting is an educational session with a guest speaker, the other an open forum discussion.
