Long-term concerns

Bariatric surgery is a life change that can result in long-term issues, including the following.

• Gallstones
  More than one-third of people undergoing gastric bypass develop gallstones, a side effect of rapid weight loss.
• Nutritional deficiencies
  Patients are at risk for developing nutritional deficiencies, which can be prevented with proper vitamin supplements. It is important to take supplements as recommended by your doctor.
• Vomiting
  Vomiting usually is caused by eating too fast, eating too much, not chewing food thoroughly enough or drinking liquids with meals. Vomiting usually can be controlled by eating slowly, limiting portion sizes, chewing thoroughly and drinking liquids between meals.
• Dumping syndrome
  Dumping syndrome may occur after bypass operations. If you eat too much food or high-fat foods and sweets, food may be “dumped” too quickly into the bowel. This may cause cramps, pain, diarrhea, low blood sugar and weakness.
• Stretching pouch or pouch outlet
  Overeating may cause the pouch and pouch outlet to stretch, which may lead to weight gain.
