When you come to Methodist Hospital for your surgery, you first will register on first floor Admitting. Next, you will be escorted to the preoperative area. Surgery typically takes from one to three hours.

Your time at Methodist Hospital will vary depending on the type of surgery. Open incision operations require a four-night stay in the hospital, on average. For those having laparoscopic gastric bypass, the stay is two nights. Laparoscopic adjustable bands require only a single night.

The length of time before you can return to work also depends on the type of surgery. All open incision operation patients must wait between four and six weeks before returning to work. Laparoscopic patients can return to work within two to four weeks. Adjustable band patients can return to work within one to two weeks.
