Dermatology Update information
|
Dermatologic conditions affect a broad spectrum of society, from caring for a newborn’s skin to diagnosing and treating an adult who has melanoma. Disease, immune system problems, drug interactions, allergies, irritants and genetic makeup all can cause dermatologic conditions, including dermatitis, hives, acne, eczema, psoriasis, among others. With the wide variety of dermatologic problems and causes come many diagnostic and treatment options.
Since primary care physicians usually are the first providers a patient sees in the health care system, primary care plays a major role in preventing and managing a patient’s skin condition and concerns. In today’s hectic primary care practice, it can be difficult for physicians to know when or how to treat the diverse number of dermatologic conditions.
Primary care physicians need to take the lead in preventing, evaluating and treating dermatologic conditions; appropriately prescribing medications; and referring patients, co-managing their conditions and monitoring progress.
Dermatology Update helps primary care physicians build knowledge and competency to evaluate, diagnose and treat dermatologic conditions. The program provides clinically relevant treatment options and management guidelines for various dermatologic conditions. Faculty will discuss practical “how-to” approaches to assist primary care physicians with patient evaluation and management as well as referral decisions. The lectures, case presentations and discussions promote active learning for better patient-centered care. The program will include time for questions and direct interaction with faculty as well as the use of the interactive automated response system (ARS).
Following this course, participants should be able to:
-
evaluate dermatological treatment options for conditions such as acne, warts, actinic keratoses and moles and select the most appropriate treatment for optimal patient care.
-
counsel patients about available drugs to treat common dermatologic conditions and suggest the most cost-effective option.
-
utilize a systematic approach for diagnosing dermatologic conditions such as tinea, eczema, and melanoma to improve patient outcomes.
-
identify when to treat a dermatological condition in primary care and when to refer a patient to a specialist.
