Program overview

A day in the life of a primary care clinician is anything but predictable or routine. Primary care clinicians serve as the patient’s first point of entry into the health care system, and see their patients regularly to keep close tabs on their health care needs. Primary care clinicians encounter as many as 400 diseases in general practice and on average run into 40 clinical dilemmas a day. Given the ever-changing and evolving field of medicine, primary care clinicians need a vast range of skills and competencies to provide the best possible patient care. In addition to maintaining an expansive knowledge base, primary care clinicians need to keep everyday practice current and evidence-based. They need strategies to diagnose and manage the enormous variety of problems patients bring—no matter how common or rare, simple or complex, acute or chronic.

As part of managing their patients, primary care clinicians often need to collaborate with other health professionals and understand when referral is appropriate. Their practices are becoming more hectic, complex, and at times, even overwhelming. Primary care clinicians need a wide range of information and skills to manage and enjoy their medical practice.

Program objectives

Following this course, participants will be able to:

  • recognize and diagnose problems in the areas of pediatrics, urology, gynecology, dermatology and oncology
  • apply strategies for treatment of clinical conditions, including diabetes, sexually transmitted diseases, celiac disease, vertigo, depression and sleep apnea
  • integrate into clinical practice appropriate immunization, medication and screening recommendations
  • order appropriate imaging and lab tests
  • initiate appropriate work-up and referral process
Conference format

This conference has been designed to present an update of common clinical problems and conditions primary care clinicians regularly face. Primary Care Update provides the latest information and strategies to apply to various clinical topics, interactive quick consults to increase competencies, the informative Shackelford Lecture, and a forum for discussing key areas of clinical practice. The conference includes time for questions and direct interaction with faculty as well as use of an interactive automated response system (ARS).
