Complementary therapies

Complementary therapies support a patient’s medical care physically, emotionally and spiritually. Complementary therapies are not meant to act as alternatives to conventional care or to interrupt prescribed medical care.

Psychology, neurology and immunotherapy research indicates that relaxation, imagery, healing touch, reflexology and prayer can improve quality of life. The following mind-body therapies are available for a fee through Park Nicollet Cancer Center. For more information, call 952-993-5700.

Massage therapy

Massage involves the therapeutic kneading of muscles with long, flowing hand movements to relieve muscular tension, stimulate circulation and bring feelings of deep relaxation and tranquility.

Healing touch

Healing touch is light, gentle touch used to promote relaxation and a sense of well-being by balancing energy. This therapy is ideal for managing fears and anxiety, preparing for medical procedures, decreasing pain and lessening side effects of  chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Qigong

Qigong is an ancient Chinese art of healing that combines mental concentration, breathing techniques and body movement to activate and cultivate our “vital energy.” Qigong uses simple movements, visualization, breathing and sound to balance the natural energy in the body. Benefits include:

  • reduced stress and tension
  • corrected breathing
  • reduced pain and side effects from chemotherapy
  • improved physical, emotional and mental balance

Reflexology

Reflexology is a gentle, noninvasive stimulation of reflex points on areas of the feet. The procedure helps release the nervous system from stress and relaxes the foot and corresponding body areas. Reflexology immediately reduces anxiety as body, mind and emotions come into balance.
