Novalis shaped beam robotic treatment

Novalis® advanced tumor treatment

Park Nicollet Cancer Center is first in Minnesota to offer advanced, cancer-fighting radiation technology that targets and treats tumors in as little as 20 minutes to 60 minutes. Novalis stands apart from other methods of treating cancer in its ability to precisely pinpoint and treat cancerous tumors and lesions of the brain, spine, lung, liver and prostate. It even treats areas that were once considered inoperable.

Shaped beams

This advanced technological system uses beams shaped to match the exact contour of the cancerous tumor or lesion. Irregularly shaped tumors receive full doses of radiation, minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. This technology also reduces potential damage to delicate body structures, including the brainstem or spinal cord.

Sophisticated software

Novalis software calculates ideal tumor access points and defines an optimal treatment plan. During treatment, Novalis moves around the patient's body, allowing radiation to quickly penetrate the entire tumor or lesion from multiple angles. The software tracks patient movements, automatically adjusting to ensure precise and accurate treatment.

Short treatment times

Novalis radiosurgery is offered in single, high-dose sessions (stereotactic radiosurgery) or multiple, smaller dose sessions (stereotactic radiotherapy). Depending on tumor location, treatment times range from 20 minutes to 60 minutes and are performed on an outpatient basis.

Short treatments provide patients with maximum comfort and scheduling flexibility. This convenient scheduling allows patients to better carry on with their everyday lives.

Patient comfort

Patients can request music therapy during Novalis sessions. Music therapy enhances cancer treatment by creating a positive relaxation experience. Patients can ask the music therapist to play live music, including guitar or flute, or select prerecorded music (CDs, iPod). The Novalis treatment room is fully wired for sound.

Music therapy is tailored to each patient's needs. Patients can select classical, country, rock or any music genre they desire. Park Nicollet Cancer Center is the first in Minnesota to integrate music therapy with radiosurgery.
