Debi's story

Debi Lillegard, MA, licensed marriage and family therapist, is an oncology psychotherapist at Frauenshuh Cancer Center.

Debi Lillegard, MA, LMFT

“In 1985, I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer. Being a patient was a lonely and frightening experience. Oncology resources were few at that time, especially for young adults. I was fortunate to be surrounded by loving friends and family.

My experience with cancer led me to seek a career working with cancer patients and their families. In my role as an oncology psychotherapist, I observe the importance of human connections – patients talking to other patients, family members supporting other family members.

The diagnosis of cancer can be a lonely experience. It is frightening and often overwhelming. Talking to others who have similar experiences is comforting. It is important for patients and their families and friends to realize they are not alone; there are others who understand what they are experiencing.

I am excited to participate in creating CONNECT. It has special significance for me since my sister was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. I was familiar with being a professional caregiver; however, the role of family caregiver is new to me.

My sister connected with another patient during her radiation treatments. After she completed her treatments, she wanted to reconnect with this person. It was very challenging, due to HIPAA* regulations and patient confidentiality. They were finally able to connect by sending messages through health care providers. Needless to say, it was challenging, time-consuming and discouraging. CONNECT will make interactions like these easier.

It has been an honor to work with dedicated, passionate volunteers and staff on this project. I look forward to opening up healing connections for our patients, their families and friends through CONNECT.
