Surgery

Two main types of surgery are used when treating cancer.

  • Excisional surgery is a local therapy used to remove cancer from your body, such as removing a tumor when it appears to be confined to one area. Chemotherapy or radiation therapy can be given before or after a surgical operation. Tissues around the tumor and nearby lymph nodes also may be removed during the operation.
  • Reconstructive surgery rebuilds an area of your body disrupted by cancer and surgery, and restores your appearance or body function.
