Music therapy

Patient playing an instrument with a music therapist.

Music therapy is used to enhance cancer treatment. It can help reduce anxiety and perception of pain, plus provide a positive experience during treatment.

Music therapists are available to play and sing a patient’s favorite musical selections. With live music, patients can choose their favorite songs, discuss memories that the music brings to life, laugh and relax more fully. Music therapy helps treat physical, psychological, emotional and social aspects of illness or disability by decreasing symptoms, allowing emotional expression and improving overall quality of life.

Music therapy:

  • enhances pain management
  • promotes relaxation, reduces anxiety
  • provides opportunities for communication
  • provides a supportive environment for expressing emotions
  • improves quality of life
  • supports grief and bereavement
  • creates a healing environment

Patients can request music therapy during daily radiation treatments and Novalis sessions. The Novalis treatment room is fully wired for sound. Frauenshuh Cancer Center is the first in Minnesota to integrate music therapy with radiosurgery.
