Cardiothoracic surgery

Cardiothoracic Surgery, part of cardiology services at Park Nicollet Heart and Vascular Center, provides a wide range of surgical services in support of cardiac, pulmonary and esophageal disease.

We have four, board-certified cardiothoracic surgeons, three physician assistants or nurse practitioners, and four perfusionists. The department is part of an organized, interdependent cardiovascular "service line" encompassing cardiology, invasive physicians and noninvasive physicians serving local and Greater Minnesota areas.

We are united by a strong work ethic; a commitment to compassionate, evidence-based, well-organized patient care; service-oriented care delivery; and "doing the right thing" as a complement to economic productivity.

We value mutual respect and cooperation, but also enjoy challenging each other at conferences. A multispecialty clinic, a significant number of patients are referred to us by non-Park Nicollet physicians, so we must maintain a strong customer focus.

Patient care
Most inpatient cardiovascular care takes place at Methodist Hospital, a 426-bed hospital with dedicated operating rooms for cardiovascular surgery and specialized nursing and supportive staff for intensive care and stepdown-unit recovery. We are committed to evidence-based practice and practice guidelines.

Most cardiac surgical care is delivered at Methodist Hospital; some is at Fairview Southdale Hospital. Surgeons have embraced coronary bypass without using cardiopulmonary bypass (off-pump revascularization), plus the increasingly complicated high-risk patients still requiring standard on-pump techniques. Newer tissue valves (stentless aortic valves) and homograft valves are used in increasing number. Mitral valve-preserving (repair) techniques have been used successfully for many years.

Efficient care is enhanced by Park Nicollet's integrated medical record and the new clinician order entry system.

Call, hospital rounding
Call is rotated by physicians on a one-in-four-night and weekend coverage schedule.

Specialized support staff are required for off-hour operations. Coverage is required at Methodist Hospital and Fairview Southdale Hospital. Weekday coverage by phone is provided by the operating surgeon, regardless of call to provide the best continuity of care.

Research, teaching
Cardiothoracic surgery is interested in teaching with all surgeons having clinical appointments with the University of Minnesota and exposure to general surgery residents rotating at Methodist Hospital. We have been involved in a number of multicenter research projects with Park Nicollet Institute. We also were involved in original work regarding off-pump coronary bypass.

Continuing medical education (CME)
Department members are expected to use their academic days to pursue CME. Those members are encouraged to attend at least one major meeting per year and must be certified by the Thoracic Board. Other available CME conferences include the cardiology department weekly meeting, cardiac cath conference, cardiology lecture series and pulmonary oncology conference.
