Patient care
Our workweek is structured as five half-days of clinic time spent seeing outpatients, four half-days of surgery and one half-day of free time. We are considered responsible for our own patients. We do sign out patients for rounds when we are out of town and on weekends. Those in town on the weekend are expected to see their patients Saturday morning.

Call, hospital rounding
Our 15 surgeons share the on-call schedule at Methodist Hospital and St. Francis Regional Medical Center. We assume responsibility for patients admitted on our day on-call, but if our surgery schedules do not permit, we may then transfer the care of that patient to another physician.

Research, teaching
Examples of academic time are participation in training programs at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center and the University of Minnesota. Students from the University of Minnesota do three-week rotations through Park Nicollet Clinic—Meadowbrook and Methodist Hospital.

We expect our physicians to be involved in some type of community activity related to medicine, such as providing educational seminars to lay groups or serving as team physicians for local high schools or colleges. We also are involved in lecturing participants in our residency program.

Continuing medical education (CME)
We expect all department members to participate in CME and attend at least two CME conferences per year.
