Maintain good blood glucose control.
Follow a food plan, become more or stay physically active, test your blood glucose regularly and take any medications as prescribed to achieve your treatment goals. This will make you feel better, too.
Stop smoking.
Smoking is a health risk for all people, but the combination of diabetes and smoking is especially deadly. People with diabetes are already at risk for high blood pressure, high cholesterol and circulation problems. Smoking increases that risk. The most important thing you can do to prevent diabetes-related complications is to stop smoking.
Reduce fat and salt in your diet.
Too much fat and salt will affect the health of your blood vessels and can cause high blood pressure (hypertension). High blood pressure increases the risk of eye damage, kidney damage, heart problems and stroke.
