Carbohydrates and low blood glucose

When your blood glucose is low, you need to treat it with a carbohydrate food or beverage. The items in the list below are examples of foods with 15 grams of carbohydrate, or one carbohydrate choice. If your blood glucose is low, treat it with one carbohydrate choice. Follow Routine 15 until your blood glucose is on target.

Carbohydrate choices (15 grams each)
  • Three to four glucose tablets
  • Half-cup juice
  • One fruit roll-up
  • One cup milk
  • Half-cup regular soft drink (not diet)
  • Six small sugar cubes
  • Six hard candies
  • One tablespoon of honey
  • Eight to 10 jelly beans
  • One, small tube cake frosting
