Blood glucose during pregnancy
Low blood glucose levels will not hurt a baby. During pregnancy, hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) is defined as a blood glucose level less than 60 mg/dL.
A very high blood glucose level (hyperglycemia) can lead to a buildup of ketones in the blood. This is called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). DKA can cause serious problems during pregnancy. It is very important to call a health care provider at the first sign of urine ketones.
Following a food plan during pregnancy can help prevent hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. A food plan also provides the necessary nutrition for the mother and her baby, helps the mother gain an appropriate amount of weight and helps prevent urine ketones.
