Goals during pregnancy

Experiencing a healthy pregnancy and delivering a healthy baby require paying extra attention to food intake, testing and recording blood glucose more often, testing for urine ketones and frequent visits to the doctor.

A woman with diabetes who becomes, or plans to become, pregnant needs to meet with the following health care professionals:

  • obstetrician or nurse-midwife
  • diabetes care provider
  • diabetes nurse
  • diabetes dietitian

Choosing an obstetrician who specializes in high-risk pregnancies is recommended. This is especially important if diabetes complications are present.

Target blood glucose levels during pregnancy
When you wake up (fasting) 60 to 90 mg/dL
Before lunch and dinner 60 to 100 mg/dL
Two hours after the start of each meal Less than 120 mg/dL
Before bed 80 to 120 mg/dL
Other targets A1C less than 7 percent and negative urine ketones
