Blepharitis

Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eyelid often caused by chronic bacterial infections at the base of the eyelashes and lash glands. This condition is common, and often associated with other conditions like dandruff and dry eyes.

The main symptoms of blepharitis are irritation, burning and itching of the eyelids or eye. Scales or crusts are often seen on the eyelashes and the eyes can become “red-rimmed.” While vision usually is not affected, blepharitis can be persistent and difficult to cure. An effective daily routine to care for and treat bleparitis involves three simple steps.

  1. Warm soaks – apply a warm, clean cloth to the lashes for one minute to two minutes.
  2. Lid scrubs – scrub the outside and edges of the eyelids, and the bases of the eyelashes with a cotton swab moistened with diluted baby shampoo. This is the most important step and should be done twice daily for four to six weeks.
  3. Ointment application – apply a thin strip of erythromycin ophthalmic ointment on the lid edges with your finger or cotton swab.
