Flashes

Flashes occur when the vitreous gel (the clear fluid that fills the inside cavity of the eye) touches or pulls on the retina, causing a person to see flashing lights or lightning streaks. This is the sensation a person gets when they say you are “seeing stars.”

When a vitreous separation pulls the gel away from the retina, flashes may appear on and for several weeks. This is common as you grow older and usually is not cause for alarm. Flashes also can appear as “heat waves” in conjunction with migraine headaches.

On occasion, as the vitreous gel pulls away, the retina may tear. If a torn retina detaches, it may require surgery. If floaters or flashes are accompanied by flashing lights or darkness in your peripheral vision, call 952-993-3150 to schedule an appointment with your Park Nicollet Eye Care professional for a careful observation of your retina and vitreous gel.
