Dry macular degeneration
Two forms of AMD exist. Dry macular degeneration, which affects about 90 percent of those with AMD, occurs due to the presence of drusen (fatty deposits under the light-sensing cells in the retina). Blurred vision is the most common early sign of dry AMD. People begin to see details in front of them less clearly, and in brighter light, the blurred vision goes away.
If you lose many of these light-sensing cells, you may see a small but growing blind spot in the middle of your field of vision. Vision loss progresses slowly. To slow the progression of dry AMD, or to decrease your risk of developing it, eat a diet rich in zinc and antioxidants, or take supplements. These supplements can be purchased in our Pharmacy @ Park Nicollet locations.
