Wet macular degeneration

Wet macular degeneration occurs when new blood vessels grow into the macula, breaking and bleeding and causing very fast, severe vision loss. Laser treatments are used to break up the blood vessels and limit damage, but treatments are helpful to only certain patients.

One of the first symptoms of wet macular degeneration is that straight lines appear crooked. Fluid from the leaking blood vessels gathers and lifts the macula, distorting vision. A small blind spot also may appear in wet AMD, resulting in loss of central vision.
