Nutritional supplements

Most people don’t need dietary supplements, although some people with special nutrition needs can benefit from them. Some supplements can be harmful in large amounts. Supplements, especially those that have not been well-tested, should be used only in moderate doses if at all. A multivitamin or mineral supplement that doesn’t exceed the recommended daily value may be helpful if you don’t get enough nutrients in your diet. When considering nutritional supplements, keep the following points in mind.

  • Unlike prescription and over-the-counter drugs, dietary supplements are not regulated. Supplements can be sold without government approval or safety testing.
  • “Natural” doesn’t necessarily mean safe. Even natural substances can be toxic at high levels. They also may interfere with medications or other treatments.
