Preventing coronary artery disease

Understanding your risk is the first step in preventing and detecting heart disease. Park Nicollet Heart and Vascular Center offers several screening and prevention services that can help reduce your risk.

Controlling your risk of developing coronary artery disease

Scientists continue to investigate the possible causes of coronary artery disease. Although there does not seem to be one specific cause, various risk factors have been linked to coronary artery disease.

Risk factors

Genetic and lifestyle risk factors can increase your risk of coronary artery disease. Men have a higher risk than women. There are some lifestyle risk factors you can control. They include not using tobacco, lowering your cholesterol and saturated fat intake, controlling high blood pressure and diabetes, maintain a healthy weight and be physically active. Learn more about risk factors and how to control them.

Heart scan

A heart scan, or coronary artery calcium scoring, is a fast, painless screening test that assesses heart attack risk using the latest multislice computerized tomography (CT) imaging technology. Learn more about heart scans.
