Body mass index (BMI)

A measurement that can be used to determine if your weight is putting you at risk for health problems, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.

Cholesterol

A fatty, wax-like substance that is made in the liver. A certain amount is needed to remain healthy, but too much can contribute to plaque formation.

Fatty streak

Very early deposits of cholesterol in the blood vessel wall.

Fibrous cap

The surface coating of a plaque. A thin fibrous cap increases the risk of plaque rupture.

Plaque

Buildup of cholesterol and other deposits in the walls of an artery.

Saturated fat

A type of fat found mostly in animal products. It tends to raise cholesterol levels in the blood.

Triglycerides

The scientific name for fat, found in the foods we eat and in the body. High levels of triglycerides increase the risk of heart disease, especially when HDL levels are low.
