Symptoms of an abdominal aortic aneurysm

Symptoms of an abdominal aortic aneurysmMost people have no symptoms at all, even if the aneurysm is large. Some people may notice a pulsating bulge in their abdomen or may feel back pain.

Plaque develops within aneurysms, and if particles (called emboli) break off, they can travel into your leg or foot, blocking blood flow and causing sudden pain.

Aneurysms may rupture, causing life-threatening internal bleeding. Symptoms an aneurysm has ruptured include:

  • sudden, intense abdominal pain that may radiate to the back or legs
  • excessive sweating or clammy skin
  • dizziness
  • fast pulse
  • feeling faint or losing consciousness

A ruptured aneurysm is a medical emergency. If you experience any of these symptoms, call 911.
