Education highlights—1999
More than 20,000 people participated in Park Nicollet HealthSource work site health fairs and screenings, including employees and families at Land O´Lakes, SuperValu, Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community and UAW-Ford Motor Company. More than 7,000 3M employees participated in Work and Family programs coordinated by HealthSource staff, including an Eldercare Resource Fair and live "Lunch and Learn" national television broadcasts.
Osteoporosis Center staff worked with HealthSystem Minnesota´s Center for Senior Services and Park Nicollet HealthSource to secure sites for comprehensive, community-wide screening and education initiatives. A research study to evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions will be launched mid-year 2000.
The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) granted four years of full accreditation status to the Institute´s Continuing Medical Education program. Nearly 8,000 participants attended 185 accredited activities in 1999, an 11 percent increase in participation over 1998.
IDC continued to influence diabetes care worldwide. Leading diabetes experts from Pakistan, Indonesia, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Mexico and Brazil were trained in the implementation of Staged Diabetes Management.
Professional Education supported care improvement initiatives and projects at HealthSystem Minnesota by assisting in the development and production of more than 50 new patient education brochures and online materials.
The Foundation HealthSystem Minnesota awarded the Arneson-Methodist Library a grant to purchase a cataloging system. The new system will eventually allow the library to facilitate online access to its journals, references and other collections.
Fifty families participated in Super Asthma Saturday, an event that helps parents better understand and manage their child´s asthma, and helps children learn about their asthma through group activities and games. Guest speaker Amy Van Dyken, 1996 Olympic medalist, shared her experiences as an athlete who has met the challenge of managing her asthma.
IDC presented "Type 2 Diabetes: Establishing Priorities for Care" to more than 1,100 practitioners in 16 U.S. cities. The continuing medical education program was supported by an unrestricted educational grant from SmithKline Beecham.
