International Diabetes Center (IDC) received an eight-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to study methods of preventing heart disease in type 2 diabetes. IDC will coordinate clinical care for the Minnesota consortium of five clinics, one of only seven consortia selected in the country.
The Institute completed its contract with the Minnesota Partnership for Action Against Tobacco to distribute 1.4 million nicotine patches to help 33,000 people in Minnesota quit smoking. The Institute coordinated distribution of the free nicotine patch kits through more than 100 health and social service organizations throughout the state.
The Minnesota Medical Association awarded its James H. Sova Memorial Award to James V. Toscano, executive vice president. The annual award is given to a person outside the medical profession who has made a significant contribution to the advancement of medical sciences, medical education, medical care or the socioeconomics of medical practice.
IDC´s Staged Diabetes Management program received a five-year, $2.75 million research grant from Becton Dickinson to continue its national leadership in diabetes guideline development and implementation.
A major American Heart Association-sponsored study is underway at six Park Nicollet Clinic sites. The Health Education Center and University of Minnesota study will involve 600 patients to determine if a clinic-based intervention can effectively change patients´ physical activity behavior and ultimately reduce their risks for cardiovascular disease.
IDC published Type 2 Diabetes BASICS, a revolutionary product designed to simplify the delivery of outcomes-based diabetes patient education in any setting. The BASICS family of publications is based on a program of the same name, developed, tested and refined by IDC educators.
The Health Education Center received three 1999 National Health Information Awards. Silver Awards went to Creating Life Balance: Easing Your Stress and the Self-Care Poster Series. The Home Safety Pyramid won a merit award. The winners were selected from among 1,000 entries judged by a national panel of health information experts.
