Institute researchers asked 4,500 Park Nicollet patients about their interest in their medical records to determine the proportion and characteristics of patients who are very interested in examining their medical records and the reasons why. The most common reason for their interest? To be more active in their own health care.

Archives of Internal Medicine published the study results and the medical and consumer communities took notice. Lead author Jinnet B. Fowles, PhD, conducted dozens of media interviews and appeared on several radio and television shows.

In recognition of the authors’ contribution to science and knowledge, the Institute named “Patients’ Interest in Reading Their Medical Record” its 2004 Paper of the Year.
