History

Proud past, innovative future

For more than 50 years, the Institute’s continual commitment to research and education has resulted in high-quality, comprehensive, innovative health care.

1921

Nicollet Clinic founded as the first multispecialty clinic in Minneapolis.

1951

 St. Louis Park Medical Center founded by 11 specialists to combine the academic discipline of clinical research with daily medical practice.

1959

St. Louis Park Medical Center founds St. Louis Park Medical Center Research Foundation to coordinate, fund and review research and education programs at the medical center.

1983

Nicollet Clinic merges with St. Louis Park Medical Center. A systematic approach is developed to promote education, research and innovation, and to rapidly translate knowledge into high-quality, effective care. St. Louis Park Medical Center Research Foundation continues to serve the new group, and becomes Park Nicollet Medical Foundation.

1996

Park Nicollet Medical Foundation becomes Institute for Research and Education HealthSystem Minnesota.

2000

HealthSystem Minnesota becomes Park Nicollet Health Services; Institute for Research and Education becomes Park Nicollet Institute.

2002

Paul E. Terry, PhD, is named president and chief executive officer of Park Nicollet Institute

2003

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention awarded the Institute more than $1 million for "Weight Loss and Activity in Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis" for guidelines in arthritis management beyond acute medical care.

The Office of Continuing Medical Education received a six-year accreditation with commendation from the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). ACCME awarded the office exemplary compliance findings in purpose and mission, planning process, needs assessment, evaluation, disclosure and commercial support standards.

2004

Metro-Minnesota Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP) received an award for outstanding contributions to cancer clinical trials from the American Society of Clinical Oncology. CCOP was one of 10 groups nominated out of 400 members.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention awarded the Institute $1.12 million to study activated health care consumers.

2005

Park Nicollet researchers and educators authored 57 peer-reviewed papers, books and book chapters.

2007
Generous donations received through Park Nicollet’s Make it Better campaign support the Institute’s goal to cultivate research that accelerates improvements in care. Several studies related to outcomes are underway.

Park Nicollet researchers and educators authored 41 peer-reviewed papers, books and book chapters; conducted 227 active research studies; coordinated, planned or taught 119 professional education activities; and led 280 health education classes.
