Monday, July 13: Parkinson's Golf Challenge

With your help, we will make life better for people facing the challenge of Parkinson's disease and their families through the annual Parkinson's Golf Challenge. Join us Monday, July 13, at The Minikahda Club in Minneapolis. Proceeds support vital patient programs at Struthers Parkinson's Center and Edina Care Residence. Find out more or register online.

Saturday, July 18, Saturday Oct. 10: Introduction to deep brain stimulation (DBS)

DBS surgery may be an option for some people with Parkinson's disease. In this three-hour session, learn more about this procedure. Topics include how DBS can help Parkinson's symptoms, tests needed before undergoing surgery, follow-up treatment, insurance coverage, individual and family support, and personal experiences.

Saturday, Sept. 12: Recently diagnosed class

Were you or a loved one diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in the past year? Learn more about Parkinson's through a class for those with the condition, and their family members and friends. This three-hour class offers an overview of Parkinson's, including facts about early symptoms, treatment and coping strategies.

Friday, Sept. 18: Rehab professionals conference

Learn how to design rehab plans to help with the unique challenges of Parkinson’s disease at this one-day conference.

Friday, Oct. 16: Nursing professionals conference

Find out practical solutions for assessing and treating Parkinson’s patients at this one-day conference.

Saturday, Oct. 24: ‘Progress & Possibilities’ for professionals, patients, families

This year’s Progress & Possibilities conference is Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Minneapolis Marriot Southwest in Minnetonka. This is the largest Parkinson’s disease educational conference in the Upper Midwest and will feature medical updates and options for living well with the condition. The conference is open to those with Parkinson’s disease and related movement disorders, family members and health care professionals. Continental breakfast and lunch will be served.

Caregiver skills-building classes

Monthly classes are offered at Struthers Parkinson's Center from 1 to 3 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month. Classes each cost $10, and are open to anyone caring for someone with Parkinson's.

Upcoming classes

  • Thursday, Aug. 6: Advance Care Planning. Learn what advance care planning should be in place for your family and medical team, and for you and your loved one.
  • Thursday, Sept. 3: Learning to Lift. This session will review proper ways to provide assistance when helping someone up from a chair, bed or car. Proper body-mechanics training and options for lifting aids and equipment also will be provided.
  • Thursday, Oct. 1: Nutrition and Swallowing Concerns. This session will focus on ensuring a healthy, well-balanced diet for your loved one, and offer suggestions to aid those with difficulty swallowing.
  • Thursday, Nov. 5: Maintaining a Safe Home Environment. This session will provide suggestions for doing a home safety tour, review medication safety and discuss what to do if your loved one falls at home.
  • Thursday, Dec. 3: Coping with Thinking and Memory Changes. Learn methods to help your loved one cope with changes in his or her memory, and how to handle difficult situations when your loved one has dementia or hallucinations.
