Ear surgery and recovery
- A small incision is made in back of the ear to expose ear cartilage.
- Nonremovable stitches may be used to maintain the new shape.
Patients may be up and around a few hours after surgery or may need to stay overnight in the hospital.
Patients will have bandages wrapped around their heads for a few days. The surgeon can prescribe a medication to control any discomfort.
Bandages will be replaced in a few days by a headband or light dressing. If removable stitches are used, they are removed in one week. Adults may return to work after five days. Children may return to school in one week, as long as they are careful in the classroom and on the playground.
After surgery, a faint scar in back of the ear remains, but will fade with time.
