Occupational therapy offers vision rehabilitation to patients with vision loss that impacts safety and independence with activities of daily living. Daily activities affected by vision loss include reading, writing, medication management, driving, productive employment, safe and independent kitchen skills, functional and safe mobility and recreational activities. Commonly encountered diagnoses include brain injury or tumors, glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

Treatment options

Frequency and duration of treatment will vary based on patients’ diagnosis and the speed at which improvement can be expected.
Specialty equipment
-
Dynavision. A computerized light board that tests and reinforces eye-hand coordination, reaction time with and without distractions, attention to peripheral vision and tracking. Dynavision is a useful tool for predriving assessments.

Visual perimeter. Assesses peripheral fields and perception of light intensity. It is used to aid in educating about and treating for such difficulties.

Campimeter. A portable evaluation tool that measures patients’ field of vision.
