Electromyography (EMG)

EMG is a physiologic study to test nerve and muscle health. The first part of the exam tests how fast a nerve conducts electricity. The second part inserts a Teflon-coated wire electrode into the muscle to detect abnormal activity.
Common diagnoses in which these studies are used

Cervical radiculopathies (arm pain and weakness)

Entrapment syndromes (such as carpal tunnel syndrome)

Lumbar radiculopathies (leg pain and weakness)

Myopathies (muscle weakness)

Peripheral neuropathies (problems with nerves outside the spinal cord, such as those caused by diabetes.
