Lymphedema rehabilitation

Lymphedema can effectively be treated to ease discomfort and improve patients’ use of their arm or leg. Lymphedema rehabilitation aims to reduce swelling and infection, reduce scar tissue and improve strength, range of motion and function in daily activities. A doctor’s referral is required for treatment.

About our program

A physical therapist completes an evaluation and develops a plan of care for each patient, emphasizing self-management at home. The physical therapist works closely with patients to establish a program to fit individual lifestyles. Treatment options based on the evaluation may include manual lymph node drainage, compression bandaging, measurement for a compression garment, exercise and education.

Our program includes the following.

  • Education. Patients learn how to modify activities to help reduce lymphedema. They also learn proper skin care, how to recognize signs of infection, self management and guidelines for exercise.
  • Manual lymphatic drainage. Light massage is performed by a therapist to move fluid to other parts of the body. Patients learn how lymphatic massage works and self-treatment techniques.
  • Compression bandaging. Low-stretch bandages are used to firm the stretched skin, prevent fluid from returning and assist muscles in moving the fluid. Patients are measured and fitted for compression garments when swelling is reduced, and also are instructed in their proper application and care.
  • Exercise. Exercises with compression bandaging help remove fluids from the affected area. The exercise program may include flexibility, strengthening or aerobic exercise to fit individual lifestyles.
  • Lymphedema educational seminar. A presentation on lymphedema is provided by a physical therapist the second Wednesday of every other month. Call 952-993-5900 for more information or to register.
