Orthotics
Biomechanically corrective orthotics may be appropriate for a variety of lower extremity complaints, including foot, ankle, knee and hip pain. Physical therapy treatment begins with a biomechanical evaluation followed by treatment, including manual therapy and exercise. When indicated, patients are evaluated for orthotics to correct the position of their foot or feet when standing.

Consideration for foot orthotics begins with the therapist assessing muscle length and strength and motion. The therapist measures and makes a cast impression of the foot. Orthotics are custom fit to each patient. If needed, temporary orthotics are made to test a patients’ tolerance and the orthotic’s overall effectiveness.
A variety of treatments, including home exercises, address foot and leg problems and enhance the success of permanent foot orthotics. Quality control, accurate filling of the prescription, proper shoe fit and patient comfort are assured when the permanent orthotics are fit to patients by a physical therapist.
