Spinal cord injury rehabilitation

The spinal cord injury rehabilitation program offers a multidisciplinary team approach to care of patients with spinal cord injuries. The comprehensive treatment program maximizes patients’ ability to function independently. Components of the program may include instruction in walking or moving safely, functional mobility (bed, wheelchair, kitchen and more) and activities of daily living (dressing, using the toilet and more). Therapists also recommend assistive devices and adaptive equipment based on patients’ needs. The program continues through all phases of care, from inpatient to home-care to outpatient.

Inpatient care

Patients will receive daily therapy, progressing to twice a day when appropriate. Often, the rehabilitation team may recommend patients be admitted to Methodist Hospital’s inpatient rehabilitation unit for intensive therapies and rehabilitative nursing care. To qualify for inpatient rehabilitation, patients need to be able to tolerate three hours per day of therapy and medically benefit from occupational and physical therapy.

The rehabilitation team meets regularly to discuss patients’ progress and goals. Ongoing communication on the plan of care is shared with patients and their families. The conference serves to review progress and determine appropriate options and timelines for discharge. The therapy team will help obtain necessary equipment for patients upon discharge.

Home-care

If patients are discharged home and considered homebound, team members provide services within their own environment. When patients are better able to move about in the community, the home-care team will help with the transition to outpatient therapy.

Outpatient services

Outpatient therapy builds upon patients’ previous therapy programs if they received inpatient care or home-care. Therapists complete an evaluation and establish an individualized treatment plan with patients and their families. Therapists work with patients to determine the frequency of therapy sessions.
