Stroke rehabilitation
Methodist Hospital’s Stroke program is an area leader in stroke care. We are certified as a primary stroke center by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) that recognize our efforts in creating better outcomes for stroke patients.
Our rehab services are accredited by the Commission on Accreditaiton of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). We currently are applying for CARF specialty certification in stroke.
Our experienced staff is committed to providing exceptional care for patients and families in the hospital, on an outpatient basis and at home. Our comprehensive services offer support and encouragement at every phase of care.
About our program
Program components may include instruction in walking or moving safely; functional mobility (getting from bed to chair, in and out of bathroom and more); activities of daily living (dressing, grooming and more); cognitive and visual or perceptual skills (awareness, judgment, recognition and understanding); eating and swallowing safely; speech and language skills; safety and judgment. Support groups also are offered to help address patients’ social and emotional well-being. The program can begin in the intensive care unit and continues through all phases of care, from inpatient to home care to outpatient as needed.
INSPIRE Neurological Learning Center provides education and support to stroke survivors and their families from admission to discharge and beyond.
Inpatient care
Inpatient care is provided at Methodist Hospital. Patients will receive therapy once or twice a day from our physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech pathologists. Treatment may begin at bedside and advance to therapy site when patients’ progress and tolerance warrant increased therapy time.
Often, the rehabilitation team will recommend patients be admitted to the inpatient rehabilitation unit for intensive therapies and rehabilitative nursing care. To qualify for inpatient rehabilitation, patients need to be able to tolerate three hours per day of therapy and medically benefit from at least two therapy disciplines.
The rehabilitation team meets regularly to discuss patients, progress and goals. Ongoing communication on the plan of care is shared with patients and their families. The conference serves to collectively review progress and determine appropriate options and timelines for discharge. Patients may be discharged to a transitional care unit or home with home-care, or begin outpatient therapies.
Home-care
If patients are discharged home and considered homebound, team members provide services within their own environment. When patients are ready, the home-care team helps with the transition to outpatient therapy, if appropriate.
Outpatient services
Outpatient therapy builds upon patients’ previous therapy programs. Therapists complete an evaluation and establish an individualized treatment plan with patients, their families and a doctor. Therapists work with patients to determine the frequency of therapy sessions.
