Speech-language pathologists, also known as speech therapists, assess, diagnose, treat and help to prevent speech, language, cognitive-communication, voice, swallowing, fluency and other related disorders.

Speech therapists work with patients who:

  • cannot produce speech sounds
  • cannot speak clearly
  • have speech rhythm and fluency problems (stuttering)
  • have voice disorders (such as inappropriate pitch or a harsh voice)
  • have problems understanding and producing language
  • can improve communication skills by modifying an accent
  • have cognitive impairments (such as attention, memory and problem solving disorders)
  • have swallowing difficulties
