Speech-language pathologists, also known as speech therapists, assess, diagnose, treat and help improve or prevent disorders in speech, language, cognitive-communication, voice, swallowing, fluency and others.

Speech therapists work with patients who:

• cannot produce speech sounds
• cannot speak clearly
• have speech rhythm and fluency problems (stuttering)
• have voice disorders (such as hoarseness from vocal nodules)
• have problems understanding and producing language
• want to improve communication skills by modifying their accent
• have cognitive impairments (such as with attention, memory and problem solving)
• have swallowing difficulties
