Comprehensive care

Park Nicollet Bariatric Surgery Center provides weight-loss surgery and follow-up care for those struggling with severe obesity. Our comprehensive services will help you be as prepared as possible for your surgery and your new life.

Procedures and types of surgery

Adjustable Gastric Band Surgery

In this procedure, a hollow band made of special material is placed around the stomach near its upper end, creating a small pouch and narrow passage into the larger remainder of the stomach. The band is then inflated with saline. It can be tightened or loosened over time to change the size of the passage.

Benefits

  • This procedure carries less risk for complications because it doesn't interfere with the normal digestive process.
  • It can be done using a less invasive laparoscopic approach.
  • It now can be done on an outpatient basis. Patients can sleep in the comfort of their own beds.
  • The bands used in surgery can be adjusted to your needs.
  • The surgery is easily reversible.
  • Dumping syndrome is less likely to occur after surgery.
  • There is less risk of nutritional deficiencies.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

In this procedure, also known as roux-en-Y, a small stomach pouch is created to restrict food intake. Next, a Y-shaped section of the small intestine is attached to the pouch to allow food to bypass the lower stomach, the duodenum (the first segment of the small intestine) and the first portion of the jejunum (the second segment of the small intestine). This bypass reduces the amount of calories and nutrients the body absorbs.

Benefits

This operation produces more dramatic weight loss because, in addition to restricted food intake, you do not absorb as many calories. People generally lose enough weight to reduce or eliminate obesity-related health problems and improve quality of life within the first year.

Outpatient Procedures

Park Nicollet Bariatric Surgery Center is one of the first in Minnesota to offer adjustable gastric band surgery on an outpatient basis – no overnight hospital stay is needed. You can spend your first postsurgical night in the comfort of your own bed. In addition to enjoying the comforts of home, patients find outpatient procedures can reduce costs.

Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy

In this procedure, more than half of the stomach is removed and a small tube is created. This surgery is typically recommended for extremely obese people (body mass index greater than 50) or those with inflammatory bowel disease, pancreas and liver problems, or organ transplant recipients.

Benefits

  • No medical device is implanted. Adjustments are not needed and the risk of complications is decreased.
  • Hernias, ulcers and chronic abdominal pain are less likely to occur.
  • Dumping syndrome does not occur.
  • Vitamin and protein deficiency is less likely to occur. The procedure does not interfere with the ability to absorb vitamins and nutrients.
  • Crushing medications is not necessary.
  • Fewer risks than with Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
