Weight-loss treatment that’s right for me

If you’re struggling with obesity, Park Nicollet has surgical and non-surgical treatment options to fit your needs. We give you a wide range of options to improve health and well-being:

  • Lifestyle changes
  • Medicine to help manage weight and improve success
  • Weight-loss surgery

A follow-up treatment program also improves your ability to keep off weight.

Getting the best treatment

What are my treatment options?

Is medicine, surgery or a lifestyle change best? The truth is that a lot of factors go into weight loss and weight gain. Most people require a combination of medicine, lifestyle change and even surgery to lose weight, keep it off and feel better.

Losing weight without surgery
If you want to lose weight without surgery, our Medical Weight Management Program may be right for you. This program helps you identify and change habits to lose weight. Medicines can also help manage weight. You’ll work with bariatricians who are experts in medical weight management.

When surgery is the best option
Weight-loss surgery may be your best option if you are severely obese. (If you have a body mass index of 40 or more.) Surgery may also be a good option if you have a serious obesity-related health problem. Park Nicollet is a leader in weight-loss surgery. We are a nationally-accredited bariatric surgery center by MBSAQIP.

Common surgery choices

1. Gastric bypass surgery (Roux-en-Y)

Gastric bypass surgery creates a small stomach pouch to limit food intake. During surgery, a Y-shaped section of the small intestine is attached to the pouch. This allows food to bypass (go around) the lower stomach and part of the small intestine. Gastric bypass reduces the amount of calories and nutrients the body absorbs. It is also called Roux-en-Y.

Benefits of this option:

  • More dramatic weight loss. Gastric bypass limits food intake and you won’t absorb as many calories.
  • Usually enough weight loss to reduce or end health problems from obesity.
  • Quality of life usually improves in the first year.

2. Gastric sleeve surgery

Vertical sleeve gastrectomy removes more than half of the stomach. It makes the stomach smaller by creating a small tube or “sleeve.” This surgery is best for extremely obese people (body mass index greater than 50). It is also recommended for people with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), pancreas and liver problems, or an organ transplant.

Benefits of this option:

  • No medical device is implanted, so adjustments are not needed. The risk of complications is decreased.
  • Hernias, ulcers and chronic abdominal pain are less likely.
  • Dumping syndrome (when food moves too fast from your stomach to bowel) won’t occur.
  • Vitamin and protein deficiency is less likely. The procedure does not change your ability to absorb vitamins and nutrients.
  • Crushing medicine isn’t necessary.
  • Fewer risks than with Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.

3. Other options

  • Adjustable gastric band. We can help manage, revise and convert lap-bands.
  • Endoscopic options. These options are less invasive.
