Healthy exercise is an integral part of a balanced life. However, the pressure of athletic competition or the drive to improve fitness levels can lead to an increased risk of developing an eating disorder.

At Melrose Center’s Physical Awareness and Rehabilitation Center (PARC), patient work on activities that promote physical and mental well-being. Our team of physical therapists and fitness specialists work with patients one-on-one and in group exercise classes to help develop healthy movement. Programming focuses on physical performance, mindfulness and skills training as patients gradually return to regular activity.

  • Phase I: Mind-body focused stretching for mindfulness and grounding skills
  • Phase II: Strength groups such as yoga flow, roller core, band power, Pilates, free weights and sports-specific drills
  • Phase III: Cardio equipment and classes such as kick boxing, Zumba, BOSU, step, circuit training and Drums Alive
  • Phase IV: Community integration programming – individual exercise programs are designed by a fitness specialist to transition patients to a fitness club or home setting

Education is a key component of every session, with topics focusing on metabolism, body image and proper exercise. Patients also may participate in mind-body groups and individual sessions to work on increasing inner awareness, improving balance and reducing anxiety.

Our team approach keeps the physical recovery and skills training in line with medical, nutritional and mental health progress. Our PARC team, as well as our therapists, doctors, dietitians, occupational therapists and nurses are highly experienced in safely incorporating exercise into every stage of recovery. From athletes to those who have never exercised, patients will learn to use exercise as a positive tool to aid in controlling their eating disorder symptoms, building a positive body image and improving their physical and mental health.
