Emotional changes

Bariatric surgery not only affects you physically, but emotionally, psychologically and socially. Your dramatic weight loss will lead to changes in the way you see yourself and the way others see you.

The emotional and social changes are different for everyone. As you experience life’s ups and downs, food can no longer be the outlet for stress or other emotional issues. In some cases, people replace eating with other compulsive behaviors, such as drinking or gambling. Others experience depression.

In addition, your interpersonal relationships may change as you lose weight. Some people find their friends become jealous or their spouse feels threatened by their new body image. Other people become angry when they realize they are treated differently because they weigh less.

If you are concerned about emotional or psychological issues that may occur after bariatric surgery, please talk with your bariatric nurse clinician for a referral to a bariatric licensed psychologist. Before surgery, Park Nicollet Bariatric Surgery Center staff conducts a health assessment to help identify and deal with any potential emotional and psychological issues you may face.
