Is surgery right for me?

Our team of nurses and doctors can help you determine if bariatric surgery can improve your health and is the best option for you. For more information about bariatric surgery, or to sign up for our free information session, call 952-993-3180.

Factors to consider

Your body mass index (BMI)

If your BMI is 40 or more, you are considered to be morbidly obese, which may make you a candidate for bariatric surgery. If you have a BMI of 35 to 40 and have serious, obesity-related health problems, you also may be a candidate for bariatric surgery. Learn more about health problems that include severe sleep apnea, diabetesheart problems and high blood pressure. Make sure you discuss your health history with our registered bariatric nurse. Calculate your BMI.

Previous attempts at weight-loss programs

Candidates for bariatric surgery usually have had numerous unsuccessful attempts at losing weight. If you have not tried to lose weight by diet modification and exercise, you will be encouraged to do this before you consider surgery.

Chemical addictions

If you have, or have had, a chemical addiction, bariatric surgery may not be right for you. This can be evaluated by a psychologist during the behavioral assessment service to determine if it would be a factor for you.

Commitment to long-term behavior and lifestyle changes

Bariatric surgery takes a lifelong commitment to healthy lifestyle choices, which include diet and exercise, among other areas. These issues will be evaluated by a psychologist and physical therapist during the behavioral assessment service.

Mental and behavioral health

Some mental health and behavioral conditions can affect how you are able to follow lifestyle recommendations after surgery. These conditions can be evaluated by a psychologist to determine if they would be a factor for you.
